Calaveras Playing Cards features art inspired by Jose Posada and the Mexican Day of the Dead. Every royal is a delightful and unexpected take on that theme rendered in a woodcut and engraved style typical of Posada's work in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He worked at the time of the Mexican Revolution and his Calaveras really caught on-surviving to this day as iconic expressions of the holiday, the social views he held, and the times through which he lived.
